US National Parks & the Effects of Overtourism*
In 2019 US National Parks had nearly 330 million visitors, up 45 million in 10 years and visitation is only projected to increase. While the accessibility to national parks to everyone was a goal of the park system, these fragile lands cannot withstand the number of visitors. The parks most affected are those that see high visitation and have smaller areas and those that are closer to cities and are in more densely populated areas, though there are other factors as well. This data visual looks at the relationship between land area, visitation, air quality, the outlook on nitrogen deposits and the 10 year increase and projected increase for each park.
